From its strong beginning in 2018, Vodno-Matka Trails has grown into a recognizable symbol of adventure tourism in Macedonia. What began as an idea of a few enthusiasts today gathers hundreds of nature and mountain running lovers from around the world.
Our achievements in numbers:
• Over 550 participants annually from 25+ countries
• Three different distances in 2026: 18K, 30K, and 50K ultra
• 100+ volunteers and local organizations involved
• Focus on sustainable use and ecology
• Certified race according to international standards (ITRA)

The start and finish of all races are located in the beautiful ethno-complex Makedonsko Selo in Gorno Nerezi, on the slopes of Vodno. Reopened in 2025 after thorough reconstruction, this complex with its 12 authentic houses represents the perfect scene for our sports-recreational event.
Here, among traditional architecture that tells stories from different parts of Macedonia, every finisher returns not only with a medal but with a feeling that they've become part of something greater — a community that celebrates the beauties of nature and the strength of the human spirit.

The routes start from the warmth of Makedonsko Selo and lead to the dramatic Matka canyon — a natural phenomenon with unique biodiversity, home to over 70 species of butterflies and numerous endemic plants.
Along the way, participants pass by spiritual gems — the monasteries of St. Panteleimon (12th century), St. Andrea, St. Nedela, St. Bogorodica, and the impressive Shishevski Monastery. These holy places, embedded in rocks and forests, are silent witnesses to the centuries-old connection between man and nature.
The path then climbs to the village of Sv. Petka, continues through the sunny village of Gorno Sonje, and reaches its culmination at Krstovar peak (1,066 m above sea level) with the Millennium Cross. From here, the panoramic view of the Skopje valley, Shar Mountain, and surrounding massifs awakens a sense of freedom and gratitude. The descent toward Sredno Vodno and return to Makedonsko Selo completes this unforgettable journey through nature.
